Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH) is a hepatic cytoplasmic enzyme predominantly located in the centrilobular region. When significantly increased, ADH may sometimes be detected as a sixth band on LDH isoenzyme electrophoresis. ADH isoenzymes specific for liver, gastric mucosa, and kidney have been identified. Alcohol Dehydrogenase is actually a family of closely related enzymes with considerable polymorphism that may influence ethanol elimination rates. Alcohol Dehydrogenase activity is responsible for the metabolic conversion of methanol and ethylene glycol to toxic compounds. Such conversion is inhibited by the administration of ethanol or 4-methylpyrazole.

ADH is claimed to be a highly sensitive marker for liver anoxiawith centrilobular damage.

Increase in

Drug hepatotoxicity, hepatocellular damage, obstructive jaundice, infection, inflammation, and malignancy.
